Predicting the Outcome of Roulette

A wheel isn't a coin flip — it's a mechanical system. Physicists asked what that's worth.

Roulette is often described as "truly random," but a spinning wheel and a rolling ball actually obey ordinary physics. This 2012 study asked how much of an edge that physics could realistically hand a player.

Study overview

Physicists Michael Small and Chi Kong Tse built on a long history of attempts to exploit the mechanical, deterministic side of roulette — including a famous 1970s effort by a group of physics graduate students nicknamed the "Eudaemons." Their paper set out to formally answer how much predictive edge is available if you know a wheel and ball's starting conditions, and whether that edge is large enough to matter in practice.

Methodology

The researchers built a simplified physical model of a roulette wheel and ball, using the ball's initial position, velocity, and deceleration (caused by friction) to estimate where it would eventually land. To test the model against reality, they used a casino-grade wheel and a simple handheld timing device — essentially a clicker — to record the ball and rotor's motion without attaching any electronics to the wheel itself, then compared predicted outcomes to actual results.

Key findings

Against a baseline expected return of about −2.7% from a random bet on a European wheel, the researchers reported that applying their model to real wheel data produced a simulated average return of roughly +18%. In other words, under the conditions of their test, knowing initial position, velocity, and acceleration was enough to turn a losing bet into a theoretically profitable one.

Limitations

The authors are explicit that their model does not account for small real-world variables — minor changes in surface friction, a wheel that isn't perfectly level, or differences in how a croupier releases the ball — any of which could reduce or eliminate the edge they measured. Their result also depended on precise, practiced timing equipment and technique, not casual visual estimation of wheel speed. Just as importantly, using a timing device to gain an edge like this is treated as an advantage play and is against casino rules — and, depending on the equipment and jurisdiction, can be illegal — so this is not a method a player could apply openly at a real table.

Practical meaning

This research is a genuine, peer-reviewed demonstration that a roulette wheel is not perfectly unpredictable in a strict physical sense — but that is very different from showing you can gain an edge in an actual casino. The technique requires specialized equipment, careful measurement under ideal conditions, and is explicitly against the rules of the game. It does not support the much more casual claims some strategy sites make about "clocking" a wheel by eye or timing spins mentally.
